Publishing and Research e-resources

Essential Health Links Gateway
Health Research Resources This section contains annotated links to 25+ Internet sites including toolkits, online bibliographies, funding sources and networks and organizations that support research in developing and emerging countries.  Many of the sites would assist research in multiple disciplines.

EHL gateway Internet skills for health information users section
These annotated links are geared toward the end-user including sites on accessing, evaluating Internet based health information and other information literacy issues.

Essential Health Links Gateway
Health Statistics This site is a combination of databases with health statistics and several sites about the use/application of statistics in research.  The latter group will be relevant to all science-related disciplines.

Web-bibliography (Authorship Skills)
This pdf contains annotated links to WWW based information on how to:
Conduct ethical research, Write a scientific paper, Write a structured abstract, Prepare and submit manuscripts for publication, Write footnotes and bibliographies and Copyright/plagiarism.

Online Tools for Researchers
The site is a list of online ‘web 2.0’ tools, designed for researchers including material about:
Using ‘the crowd’ for research (crowdsourcing, surveys), Scientific social networking, Sharing Science (data, figures, code, samples), Lab management tools, Paper writing and publishing tools and Find, organize and discuss papers.

SiteFinder This site supports research sites in developing their experience and diversity the types of study in which they are involved.   Through this resource, research sites can register and let would-be collaborators and sponsors know about them, their previous experience and what type of research they would like to take part in.  Also, research groups can post their research plans and potentially locate partners. After registering, institutions can search the database to find a search, identify a study seeking sites, enter a study and enter a site. SiteFinder is part of the Global Health Network.

Journal Advisor (english editing for scientists)
The website details the step-by-step process for publishing a journal article.  It guides you through Journal Selection, Writing, Submission, Responding to Peer Review and Publication Success.  Users also can find/communicate with editors who are native-English speaking experts in their scientific fields.

Journal Selector (english editing for scientists)
This resource uses semantic technology to help identify the proper
journal(s) for the publication of specific research. Using the Journal Selector box, you can enter your abstract or sample text. The results are a list of journals that publish in related areas. Searches results are based on such factors as publication frequency, Impact Factor or publishing model, including open access.

Training
Information Management Resource Kit (iMARK)
This FAO e-learning project focuses on training for management of agriculture resources but the material is relevant for other disciplines; available free via the Internet or as CD-ROMs, it is a series of self-paced, distance learning modules on the management of electronic resources, building electronic communities, investing in information management and digitization and digital libraries.

INASP training resources
This U.K. based NGO has developed numerous information literacy training courses; topics range from accessing information in developing countries to information literacy and science on the Internet;  training materials can be downloaded free of charge.

AuthorAid
is global online network that provides support, mentoring, resources (over 500 full-text documents) and training for researchers in developing countries.  Of particular use is the mentorship program that assists early career researchers with their research and writing.

Authorship skills modules on HINARI training page
Topics include how to write/publish a scientific paper including structured abstracts, copyright and plagiarism, writing skills and an annotated web bibliography.

Reference management software modules
Also available on the HINARI training page; includes modules for Zotero (open source) and Mendeley (free version); these modules discuss how to download the software and the key features of these resources.
