WORKSHOP ON SCIENTIFIC WRITING AND INFORMATION LITERACY (30th October to 10th November, 2017)

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The ten (10) days’ workshop will equip participants with relevant knowledge and skills in Scientific writing and information to doctorial and MSc by research at MUHAS, faculty members, and other researchers and practitioners from outside MUHAS.

COURSE CONTENTS:
The course will be conducted for a period of two weeks. The following topics will be covered:
o   Basis of scientific writing
o   Information retrieval and text mining
o   Citation and reference management and relevant software
o   Writing an original scientific article and thesis
o   Writing winning grant proposals
o   Writing in popular science: policy briefs, blogs
o   Publication process and evaluation of published science
o   Ethics in scientific writing,
o   Copyright and licensing issues in online publishing
o   Sharing of academic content on web 2.0 technologies and information self-services

SCHEDULE OF THE TRAINING
·         Week One (30th October – 3rd November, 2017) – will focus on scientific writing
o   Basics of scientific writing, writing a scientific journal, popular science, grant writing, and publication process, submission and peer review, ethics in scientific writing
·         Week Two (6th – 10th November, 2017) – will focus on information search strategies and reference management
o   Information retrieval and text mining, Citation and reference management and relevant software, open access, open data and open science, access to subscribed databases, sharing of academic content on web 2.0 technologies and information self-services, and copyright and licensing issues in online publishing

TARGET GROUP:
This short course is targeted to PhD candidate and MSc students by Research, faculty members, and other researchers and practitioners from outside MUHAS.

WORKSHOP DATES AND VENUE:
The workshop will be conducted from 30th October to 10th November 2017 (10 days) at Muhimbili University library ICT LAB located at the 2nd Floor of the library building.

WORKSHOP FEE:
The training is free for MUHAS students.
However, participants from outside MUHAS will need to pay the tuition fees.
  • The total workshop fee is TZS 500,000/= per each participant covering the course fee, stationeries, refreshments and certificates.
  • However, if the participant prefers to attend the workshop only for one week, the workshop fee will be250,000/-

The course will be facilitated by experienced subject experts from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences.

WORKSHOP ON RECORDS MANAGEMENT AND ORGANIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE (14th – 16th NOVEMBER 2017)


The Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) through its Directorate Of Library Services (DLS) would like to advertise a workshop on Records Management and Organization  of  Knowledge.



COURSE OBJECTIVES:
The three days workshop will equip participants with advanced knowledge and technical skills on records management and organization of knowledge.

COURSE CONTENTS:
Specifically the workshop will cover the following topics:
·         Basic records terminologies and different types of records
·         Standards and procedures for organization of records
·         Application of procedures for  organizing  records
·         Introduction to organization of knowledge
·         Descriptive cataloguing of information materials using AACR2 rules
·         Subject analysis and formulation of subject headings
·         Application of Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal Classification Schemes
·         CIP Cataloguing
·         Online cataloguing

TARGET AUDIENCE:
Professionals involved in information management, records management, archivists, librarians, information scientists, and any other professionals in records management and library cataloguing and classification.

The workshop will be conducted from 14th – 16th NOVEMBER 2017 (3 days) at Muhimbili University Library ICT LAB

WORKSHOP FEE:                                                                                                                         
The workshop fee is TZS 350,000/= per each participant covering the course fee, stationeries, refreshments and certificates. Participants are requested to arrange transport and accommodation at their own cost.

The course will be facilitated by experienced subject and educational specialists from Muhimbili University Library.

Digitization and Digital Preservation Workshop - 3 Aug – 4 Aug 2017

Systematic review and meta-analysis training

These are the participants who attended the training on systematic review and meta-analysis which was conducted 8th to 12th May 2017 at  at MUHAS Library.

The workshop was conducted by the Directorate of Library Services, School of Public Health and Social Sciences at MUHAS and the Africa Academy of Public Health.




The workshop was conducted for five days.  The participants expect to register their protocols and finally publish their systematic review.

WORKSHOP ON MARKETING AND PROMOTION OF INFORMATION SERVICES, APPLICATION OF WEB 2.0 TOOLS AND OTHER TECHNOLOGIES

The Directorate of Library Services (DLS) is planning to conduct a workshop on Marketing and Promotion of Information services application of Web 2.0 Tools and other Technologies. This workshop will equip participants with relevant knowledge and skills in promotion and marketing of their information services by using web 2.0 tools and other technologies. The workshop also familiarizes participants with different strategies used currently in Libraries/information centers.
The workshop will be conducted from Tuesday 27th to Thursday 29th June, 2017 at MUHAS Library ICT Lab.
The workshop will cover the following:
·         Introduction to marketing & marketing strategies for promoting information services
·          Introduction to web 2.0 technologies and marketing strategies and policies for information centers
·         How to set up web 2.0 tools for marketing information services: social network pages, social book marking, audio/video podcasting, blogs and wiki
·         How to create electronic marketing tools: multimedia files using movie-maker and online photo collections
·         Embed multimedia and photo gallery  to your Blog, and other social media for sharing
·         Use of quick response (QR) code technology as a marketing tool
·         Tools for generating Library Reports for Management feedback: Google Analytics & tracking site visitors and downloads

The fees of the workshop is 350,000/= for three days program to cover the tuition fee, venue and meals (refreshments and lunch) during the day.

Digital Repository and Web 2.0 Technologies Workshop at MUHAS (18-20 April 2017)

 Participants attending a workshop on digital repository and web 2.0 technology at MUHAS from 18th to 20th April 2017.

A total of 23 participants attended the training from various institutions in Tanzania.









The training focused on building knowledge, skills and competencies on:

  • Digital repositories: policies, installation and configuration, generation of statistics and content management
  • Web 2.0 technologies including use of blogs and google drive to market repository contents, and use of Google analytics.

Short Course on Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (8th to 12th May 2017)

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The School of Public Health and Social Sciences in collaboration with Directorate of Library Services, and Africa Academy of Public Health are planning the first short course in Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis for members of academic staff. The aim of this short course is to provide members of academic staff in MUHAS with necessary hands-on skills to conduct systematic review. 

REQUIREMENTS
This short course targets academic staff of all schools in Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences. Junior faculties are highly encouraged to apply. Application and attendance is free and is inclusive of lunch but commitment to complete this one-week course is a pre-requisite. To maximize the productivity, participants are encouraged to have research ideas that they wish to work on in groups.

DELIVERABLE
The one-week course will have the selected protocols registered and published in a selected systematic review database (CRD-PROSPERO).
Following registration of the protocols, facilitators will continue to guide the review process by teams through publication of the systematic reviews within agreeable timeline.

TRAINING ON LITERATURE REVIEW SKILLS AND PLAGIARISM FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS AT MUHAS



The Directorate of Library Services (DLS) is planning to conduct a training workshop on literature review

skills and plagiarism for Postgraduate students on Wednesday  th March, 2017 at the Library computer

lab from 2pm to 5pm.


 The following topics will be covered:

 Introduction to literature review

 Deciding on aim

 Organize formal argument

 A critical analysis and constructive synthesis

 Database for literature search

 Overview of plagiarism and detection on online tools for anti-plagiarism

A WORKSHOP ON OPEN DATA, OPEN SCIENCE AND OPEN ACCESS TO FACULTY MEMBERS AT MUHAS

The Directorate of library services is planning to conduct training on Open data, Open Science and Open access to faculty members at MUHAS 16th to 17th March, 2017.

The content of the workshop include:
    Introduction to open data, open access and open science
     Databases and tools for open access journals, repositories
      Online tools for open science aggregators and publishing platforms
            - Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier (ORCD)
            - Plagiarism and copyright issues issues 
           - Publication & citation analysis
