A research article on the experiences of Integrating Web 2.0 technologies at MUHAS, Tanzania
Author(s): Edda
Tandi Lwoga, (Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences)
Citation: Edda
Tandi Lwoga, (2014) "Integrating Web 2.0 into an academic library in
Tanzania", Electronic Library, Vol. 32 Iss: 2
Article type: Research
paper
Publisher: Emerald
Group Publishing Limited
Abstract:
Purpose - This paper demonstrates work undertaken by
Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) Library in an effort
to integrate web 2.0 technologies in its functions to enhance the quality of
its services in Tanzania
Design/methodology/approach - The study conducted an exploratory
questionnaire survey to assess user requirements among undergraduate medical
students at MUHAS, developed library 2.0 services, conducted training and
created awareness.
Findings - The paper shows that web 2.0 technologies can be
implemented effectively according to University goals, user’s needs, deployment
of user friendly tools, and capacity building among librarians and users.
Students positively supported the adoption of library 2.0 services at MUHAS.
Library 2.0 services improved the quality of MUHAS library services, despite
various challenges related to infrastructure, awareness, literacy, inadequate
staff, security and ownership of web 2.0 services.
Research limitations/implications - The study findings may
not be widely replicated because this article is based on a case study of the
integration of web 2.0 technologies into the library functions of MUHAS. This
study did not examine the use of library 2.0 applications among library users
(such as faculty and students) which could illuminate further the case study
Practical implications - Most academic libraries in Africa
have not yet adopted web 2.0 technologies to improve their services. The user
preferences, technology adoption, and challenges faced from the present study
can help other libraries to plan and integrate their library 2.0 technologies
in their services.
Originality/value - MUHAS library offers practical example
of how web 2.0 services can be adopted to enhance the quality of academic
library services in an African context. This paper is of significance to
academic libraries that are still considering their options with regard to the
application of web 2.0 technologies.

Tanzanian University of Health and Allied Sciences Continues its Evidence-Based Practices with Access to Influential, High Quality Transfusion Medicine Research
A recent systematic review conducted by the Collaboration for Evidence Based Healthcare in Africa (CEBHA) on evidence-based healthcare treatment (EBHC) has shown that EBHC teaching and learning strategies on the African continent should focus on implementing multifaceted, clinically integrated approaches and assessment. Also, urgent attention should be given to the development of research capacities in low performing countries around Africa supported by an increased focus on the process of turning program research evidence into policy and practice.
That is why Evidentia Publishing is pleased to announce that the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has now full access to the Transfusion Evidence Library - an unique online database providing high quality, evidence-based information for all clinical research related to blood transfusion. In support of MUHAS’ efforts to have access to the highest quality standards and collaborative health research in Tanzania, the Transfusion Evidence database will allow them to get valuable evidence-based medical information for guiding them through the management, control and prevention of major diseases related to blood transfusion medicine the country faces.
Dr. Tandi Lwoga, PhD, Director of the Library Services at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, said, “We’re very happy that with the Transfusion Evidence Library we now can research influential, evidence based health care resources. This database is really good helping us to apply valuable knowledge into our daily medical teachings and treatments around blood transfusion and blood alternatives. The data will contribute a lot to promote quality evidence based practices in our institution.” Mark Schregardus, CEO of Evidentia Publishing, elaborated on the latest customer addition: “High quality, relevant research is critical for Tanzania’s national development of practicing medicine.
We applaud the MUHAS’ dedication to the advancement of medical knowledge and applying learning and technology extension with evidence based clinical trials and systematic reviews. Our Transfusion Evidence database will become a indispensable asset for the transfusion medicine staff and students at the institution.”
